What is a fence?
A structural screen or similar. Trellis extensions on fences usually count as part of a fence.
What is a dividing fence?
A fence that separates two properties
What is Street side fence?
A fence that runs a long a street, side street or alley. The council rules are often different for these fences as compared to dividing fences.

Materials
Types of timbers used
In Australia we have many choices of indigenous timbers. However, we still also have exotic trees shipped over from other countries. This is usually due to price.
Timbers that are commonly used for decking in Australia:

Steel can be used in the form of tube, I-beams and other formats. Coatings are needed to ensure longevity in the weather.
