Styles - Cottage Gardens

What is a cottage garden?

A cottage garden is an informal style that is usually made up of an eclectic palette of plants with high flowering variability. Some have a considered colour palette and others are made up of every colour under the sun. It is a common style throughout Britain and has made its way around the world.

The style originated as a subsistence tool with food plants interspersed with companion flowers and commonly enclosed and is now more thought of as an aesthetic space revolving around the flowers.

Plantings are commonly dense with no sight of soil or mulch once annual plants have established.

History

It is thought they originated around the 14th century in England.

Common Elements

Arbors are one of the most common adornments to accompany pathways for movement and fencing for enclosure and pest proofing sometimes made from living hedges. Bricks, stone and crushed rock are common pathway surfaces arranged to compliment the old informality.
